Jugular Phlebectasia


Abstract
Phlebectasia OF THE JUGULAR VEIN IS KNOWN TO BE RARE AND ABOUT 40 CASES Have been reported in the literature. It is described an abnormal fusiform or saccular dilatation of the jugular vnous system and differentiate it from the torm 'varicose'
which
implies tortuosity plus dialation. Usually, presents as a neck mass that increases in size with increase intrathoracic pressure or maneuvers. Clinically jugular phlebectasia is self limited benign condition. A clinical analysis was made on 6
cases
of
jugular veous ectasia which were surgically treated in the period from 1989 to 1993 at the Department of Surgery. Paik Hospital. The ratio of male to female was 6:0. Common complaints at admission were cervical mass during coughing, sneezing and
strengthening. Average duration of symptom was 4months (range: 1 to 12 Months). Operative procedure was excision in all cases. Six follow up patients are disease free and have no complication such as recurrence or rupture Progressive increase in
sized
coupled with discomfort may be expoerienced following physical activity and if throublesome may be an indication for surgical treatment. Surgical excision is reserved for cosmetic reason or for discomfort.
